Dr Abdullah Abdurahman became the first elected coloured counciller in Cape Town in 1904. Except for 2 years (1913 - 1915), he remained a member until his death in 1940. He was also the first president of the African Native and Coloured People's Organization, later called the African People's Organisation. There is a road named after Dr Abdurahman which runs through Bridgetown.
