Defective Condoms: Statement by City Health

There has been a fair amount of media coverage regarding the fraud case of an SABS official who granted the SABS stamp of approval to condoms that did not conform to SABS standards.

This case only relates to one of numerous suppliers of "Choice" branded condoms to the Department of Health, namely Latex Surgical Products (LSP).

The City's Executive Director for Health, Dr Ivan Toms, says: "The good news is that this supplier does not supply condoms to the Western Cape Province and therefore there is no need for people to worry about the quality of "Choice" branded free condoms in Cape Town and in this province".

City Health distributed almost 56 million condoms in the last financial year. This amounted to 50 condoms per adult male (15 years and older) per year. Cape Town is proud to be the leading district throughout South Africa in effectively distributing such a high number of condoms. We try and make it very easy and convenient for clients to pick up free condoms from all our clinics, libraries, housing offices and in other City buildings.

"Practising safer sex by using a condom every time you have sex is a key part of our prevention campaign against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. I want to thank the people of Cape Town who are actively working to protect themselves and those they love from HIV by practising safer sex. City Health and the Provincial Health Department will continue to make sure you have easy access to free quality condoms," he added.
